About APNG (.apng)
APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics) adds frame control (fcTL) and frame data (fdAT) chunks on top of the same signature, chunk structure, and CRC rules as the still raster profile in ISO/IEC 15948, yielding multiple timed frames with disposal and blend between them and typically 24-bit color with 8-bit alpha per frame. Decoders that understand APNG play the sequence; others usually decode only the first frame as a single still image.
Frame timing, loop count, and disposal methods affect motion and memory use. File size grows with frame count, resolution, and how much each frame changes; partial updates (not redrawing the full canvas every frame) are common in well-authored files. Each frame’s image payload uses the same lossless DEFLATE scanline model and alpha semantics as the still half of ISO/IEC 15948.
