About JPEG (.jfif)
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group, ITU T.81 / ISO 10918-1) encodes lossy photographic imagery using blockwise DCT, quantization, and entropy coding, usually with chroma subsampling (e.g. 4:2:0) to exploit human vision. .jpg, .jpeg, .jfif, and .pjpeg typically denote the same coding family; JFIF is a widespread minimal interchange wrapper around the JPEG byte stream.
Common implementations use 8 bits per channel; alpha is not part of the core still model (nonstandard transparency hacks exist but lack universal support). Progressive scans reorder frequency data for incremental decode. Repeated decode–edit–re-encode cycles accumulate generational loss because quantization is reapplied each generation.
