About FITS (.fits)
FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is the astronomy community’s standard for self-describing datasets: ASCII or binary header “cards” (keyword=value) followed by one or more data units (HDUs). Images may be 2D planes, 3D cubes (e.g. wavelength slices), or higher-dimensional stacks.
BITPIX defines storage type (8/16/32 integer, float, double); BZERO/BSCALE linearly map stored integers to physical values; WCS keywords describe celestial coordinates. Casual viewers often show only the primary HDU and ignore extensions, masks, and physical units—scientific fidelity requires preserving headers and numeric dtype through the workflow.
