About WebP (.webp)
WebP is a RIFF-based container family from Google built around VP8 (lossy), VP8L (lossless), and related bitstreams. It supports lossy and lossless stills, an alpha channel, animation (frame-based, with disposal similar in spirit to classic animated raster formats), and optional ICC profiles and EXIF/XMP metadata.
Typical stills combine spatial prediction and entropy coding; animated sequences store a chain of subimages with timing metadata. Decode behavior and color management depend on the runtime; some older environments lack decoders entirely. WebP is designed primarily for efficient delivery of raster assets on the web while keeping a single container for still and short animated content.
