Excel Practice Speed Drills: Improve Accuracy Under Time Pressure

By ZonoTools5 min read

Why speed drills work

Most Excel users know the formula, but lose time when identifying ranges and conditions. Speed drills train the exact skill of reading a prompt and translating it into a clean formula quickly.

A simple 15-minute drill format

  • 3 minutes: warm up with basics (`SUM`, `AVERAGE`, `COUNT`).
  • 7 minutes: conditional set (`IF`, `SUMIFS`, `COUNTIFS`).
  • 5 minutes: one advanced task (`XLOOKUP` or `FILTER`).

Track both completion time and first-attempt correctness.

What to measure

  • Time to first valid formula.
  • Number of argument-order mistakes.
  • Number of wrong range selections.

If your time improves but mistakes increase, slow down and optimize for correctness first.

Weekly progression plan

  • Week 1: focus on range accuracy.
  • Week 2: focus on conditional logic.
  • Week 3: focus on mixed-function tasks.

The goal is not just to type faster, but to think in formula patterns faster.
