White Noise Generator

How to use

  1. Press Play. The generator produces a stereo white noise buffer in memory and loops it — there's no download step.
  2. Adjust the master and layer volume sliders. White noise is loud; most people are comfortable around 40–55%.
  3. For sleep, try the Brown Noise for Sleep variant instead — the low-end emphasis is gentler for long sessions.
  4. For focus blocks, add a thin rain layer in the full mixer to soften the top end.

FAQ

Is the noise a recorded file?

No. It's generated in your browser with Math.random and the Web Audio API, so there's nothing to download and the output is slightly different every time you open the page.

Can I use this in the background while I work?

Yes. Leave the tab open and the loop keeps playing. Note that some browsers throttle inactive tabs; if playback hiccups, keep the tab focused or minimised with audio active.

White vs pink vs brown — which should I pick?

White is flat and bright. Pink rolls off the high end (great for long focus). Brown rolls off even more (best for sleep and masking low-frequency noise).

What white noise is

White noise is a signal with equal power across all audible frequencies.
In practice your ear perceives it as bright and hissy, because each equal-Hz
band contains more energy than our non-linear hearing expects.

That brightness makes white noise very good at masking high-frequency
distractions — keyboards, speech, sudden clicks — which is why it's popular
for focus and open-office environments.

When to pick something else

  • Pink noise rolls off the top end and feels less fatiguing for long
    focus sessions.
  • Brown noise rolls off even more and is the best single-layer choice
    for sleep.
  • Rain masks a similar frequency range but sounds natural; most people
prefer it over pure noise for multi-hour use.

Best practices

  • Don't crank it. White noise at high volume can cause listening fatigue
    within 30–60 minutes.
  • If the top end feels harsh, add a low-volume rain or pink noise layer to
soften it without losing masking power.
